Medicines and treatment of High blood pressure

1.Angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin recceptor blockers(ARB):
ACE act by blocking angiotenis coverting enzyme that converts angiotensin into its active form which acts on the blood vessels and cause constriction whereas its inactive form cannot cause constriction so its helps in conroling hypertension to a effective degree.ACE inhibitors include:
  • Enalapril (Vasotec)
  • Captopril (Capoten)
  • Benazepril (lotensin)
  • Ramipril (Altace)
  • Moexipril (Univasc)
2.Beta-Blockers:
In heart and blood vessels there are recceptors for sympathetic nrevous system that are called beta-blockers.when these recceptors are stimulated these increase the heart rate and increase the force of its contraction.Beta-blockers act on the heart to slow the heart rate and decrease its force of contraction.
The beta-blockers include:
  • Atenolol (Tenormin)
  • Propranolol (Inderal)
  • Metoprolol (Toprol)
  • Penbutolol (Levatol)
  • Bisoprolol (Zebeta)

Genetic influence on blood pressure discovered !

It has been discovered that those carrying the SKT39 gene variant had raised blood pressure compared to those carrying other forms of the gene.Located on CHROMOSOME 2 SKT39 gene produces a protein which help to regulate how the kidney processes salt which is a key determining factor in blood pressure.Scientists believe that with the discovery of this gene we will be able to develop a more programmed treatment of hypertension.
